What's the difference between Percocet and straight oxycodone? ›

Both Percocet and oxycodone-CR products relieve pain, but while Percocet gives relief for about five hours, the effects of oxycodone-CR last for about 12 hours, when taken as prescribed. Percocet contains five milligrams of oxycodone, which is all released when the pill is taken.

Oxycodone is only available on prescription. It comes as slow-release tablets, standard tablets and capsules, and a liquid that you swallow.

Oxycodone is marketed alone as OxyContin® in 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg extended-release tablets and other immediate-release capsules like 5 mg OxyIR®. It is also marketed in combination products with aspirin such as Percodan® or acetaminophen such as Roxicet®. How is it abused? Oxycodone is abused orally or intravenously.

OxyContin is available as a 10 milligram (mg), 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg tablet. The tablets vary in color and size according to dosage. The tablets are imprinted with the letters OC on one side and the number of milligrams on the opposite side.

Potency – Oxycodone is generally considered more potent than hydrocodone, meaning it can provide more substantial pain relief but also has a higher risk of addiction. Side effects – Both drugs have similar side effects, including drowsiness, nausea, and constipation.
